Due to the impact that our disappointing national & local economic conditions have had on the construction industry in Santa Clara & San Benito Counties, applications for Plumbing and Steamfitting Apprenticeships will not be available for 2012. Interested parties may visit the Pipe Trades Training Center weekdays from 8:30 to 4:00 (weekends and holidays excepted) and fill out an "Interest Card" so that you can be notified when applications and testing resume.
Applications are currently available ONLY for Apprenticeship in Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Mechanical Service. The application will not be transferrable to the Plumbing or Steamfitting-Pipefitting Apprenticeships. Completed applications for Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Mechanical Service will be accepted on the following dates from 8:30am to 4:00pm at the Training Center office:
Individuals submitting an application at this time will still have to apply again in order to become eligible to take the test for Plumbing or Steamfitting-Pipefitting Apprenticeships. We are hopeful that economic conditions will improve in 2012 which may allow us to resume application and testing for all trades in 2013. Thank you for your patience and interest in our program.
Your completed application must include: 1) Your high school diploma or GED and 2) Valid Photo Identification.
HOURLY WAGE RATE:
Starting wage is 41% of Journeyman wage rate.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE TRADE:
Apprentices will be required to be in possession of a valid Driver's License and maintain a safe driving record. Apprentices shall be under constant supervision of a qualified journeyman at all times. The trade requires physical effort on the part of the apprentice to do climbing, crawling, pulling, lifting, crouching and working in cramped quarters. Mechanical ability and finger dexterity are very essential. Depending on the job, the work may be performed either indoors or outdoors, with the major portion of the work outdoors in semi-sheltered or unfinished buildings or in deep ditches and on high scaffolds.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
1. AGE : Must be at least 17 years of age. Applicants who are 17-years-old with a high school diploma, or its equivalent, may take the examination, but if successful will not be dispatched as an apprentice until they reach their 18th birthday.
2. EDUCATION : Must be a high school graduate or hold a High School Proficiency Certificate or have an acceptable GED Certificate or a college diploma.
3. PHYSICAL : Applicant must be of such physical condition as not to place him/herself or their future co-worker in jeopardy. Should a question arise as to other physical condition of an applicant prior to being chosen as a probationary apprentice, he/she may be required to pass a physical examination prescribed and paid for by the JATC.
LENGTH OF APPRENTICESHIP:
The length of apprenticeship for these trades is five (5) years of on-the-job training which includes five (5) years of night school.
The selection of apprentices will be made on the basis of qualifications alone, without regard to sex, race, creed, color, national origin, religion, age or handicap.
ENTRANCE EXAMINATION:
Qualified applicants will be notified of the date, time and place to report for the Entrance Examination and the Applicant Readiness Course. The Entrance Examination is scheduled as follows:
Date: Saturday, April 16th, 2011
Time: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Place: TO BE DETERMINED
The Entrance Examination will take approximately six (6) hours.
Failure to appear for the Entrance Examination will be just cause to void the application.
DESCRIPTION OF OCCUPATIONS
Plumbing
The plumber protects the health and safety of the community by providing pure water to residential, commercial and industrial buildings for drinking, cooking, washing, cleaning, manufacturing or personal use, and to remove waste water after it has served its purpose. All piping and plumbing fixtures must be installed in accordance with local plumbing codes and Board of Health requirements.
Steamfitting-Pipefitting
The steamfitter protects our environment by properly installing piping and equipment for complex heating/air conditioning and special industrial piping systems such as semiconductor, biotechnology and power generation.
Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Mechanical Service
The Refrigeration/Air Conditioning Service Mechanic is responsible for the service, repair, installation, and retrofit of all types of refrigeration equipment, from the smallest air conditioning systems to the air conditioning and refrigeration units used in hospitals, skyscrapers, research and development laboratories, supermarkets and other complex installations.

Our affiliation with Foothill Community College allows for a fully accredited program through the Division of Apprenticeship Standards for the State of California. We have over 70 instructors that bring first rate teaching skills and a vast store of field experiences to bear in order to enrich your classroom experience.

The program consists of five years of supervised on-the-job training that is accompanied by classroom instruction that supports and compliments the jobsite experience. A beginning apprentice in one of our commercial tracks will earn in excess of $20 per hour and pays no tuition.
Upon graduation from the program the apprentice is granted journey level status. Journeymen are encouraged to return to the training center in order to expand their knowledge and add to their skill sets through our journey level training program. Tuition free!
